The Fairlands Practice is primarily an NHS general practice. However, we do offer a number of private services that are mainly based at the Fairlands Medical Centre but are sometimes provided at our branch surgery. These include physiotherapy, osteopathy and acupuncture. You can see details of these from the menu on the left. These services are available for all of our patients as well as being open to anyone else. Reception will be happy to arrange appointments or give any advice required.
Private consultations
The doctors also provide private consultations where patients choose to request this so long as they are not already registered with the practice for NHS services. We regret that NHS regulations do not at present permit us to provide private medical checkups such as those available from BUPA, etc., to patients who are on our NHS lists.
Other private services
There are a number of services that are not available to our registered patients as a free NHS entitlement. A full range of such non-NHS services is provided and are charged at recommended BMA rates. These services include completion of private certificates, insurance claim forms, insurance and other private medical examinations, etc..
Please give as much notice as possible when you request these services. Full details of the services offered and charges for these are available from Reception.

Structural Osteopathy
An Osteopath aims to restore mobility to the body in order to reduce or alleviate pain. Osteopathy is a manipulative therapy that specialises in joint, muscle and ligamentous problems, experienced in both the spine and peripheral joints. The treatment consists of gentle rhythmical stretches of the joints of all parts of the body, soft tissue massage type treatment, and manipulation of joints.
The aim is to restore normal muscle tone and joint relationships therefore improving mechanical function of the body and reducing/alleviating pain and inflammation.
Cranial Osteopathy
 |
Cranial Osteopathy is a refined and subtle type of Osteopathic treatment that uses very gentle manipulative pressure to encourage the release of stresses throughout the body, including the head. Cranial Osteopathy is particularly effective for the treatment of babies. Birth is one of the most stressful events of our life and the effects of a difficult labour can cause a variety of problems in some babies. Commonly treated conditions include colic and wind; feeding difficulties, sleep disturbances and recurrent infections |
How can Osteopathy help?
Both structural and cranial Osteopathy can help the following symptoms:
> Lower back pain
> Sciatica and leg pain
> Headaches, sinus and face pain
> Neck pain
> Shoulder and arm pain
> Sports injuries
> Trauma injuries (car accident or fall)
> Osteoarthritis
> Back and neck pain associated with pregnancy and nursing babies
Cranial Osteopathy for babies and children can help with the following conditions:
> Crying babies
> Colic
> Sleeplessness
> Ear infections
> Colds/congestion on the chest
> Sticky eyes
> Learning difficulties and poor concentration
> Growing pains
What happens at a consultation
A visit to an Osteopath will start with a full case history being taken with special emphasis on any mechanical or joint problems experienced. An examination will follow where you may be asked to remove some clothing and perform movements so that the Osteopath can assess how your mobility is affected and which muscle and ligaments are involved in causing the problem. If necessary the Osteopath will liase with your doctor or consultant and further tests or investigations may be required to assist the Osteopath in the treatment plan. The Osteopath will able to explain the nature of your problem and the necessary action needed to help. You should expect to feel the results of the treatments within 3 visits, but to get the full benefit it may take a longer course of treatment, depending on the nature of the problem. The Osteopath will be able to indicate how many treatments are likely to be required.

About Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a gentle and safe system of medicine, which focuses on the whole person. The symptoms of the illness are used as a guide to find a remedy and the most similar remedy acts to stimulate the body’s own healing process. Homeopathic remedies are safe to use because the special method of preparation means that they are prescribed in minute doses and consequently do not have the potential side effects experienced with some conventional drug treatments.
Because homeopathy is an holistic therapy all aspects of a person’s health and lifestyle are considered together with any causative and inherited factors. Where appropriate advice will be given on nutrition; this can range from an elimination diet in cases of food allergy or intolerance to nutritional supplements where there are problems with assimilation or at times when the nutritional status changes i.e. pregnancy.
Homeopathy can be used to treat most health problems, including eczema, asthma, recurring infections e.g. glue ear, hormonal imbalances e.g. PMS and menopausal problems and digestive irregularities. People who have homeopathic treatment often find that as well as an improvement in their main problem their immunity, vitality and well-being are generally increased.
Sarah Bogue holds a clinic on Wednesday mornings at The Fairlands Medical Centre. If you would like further information or advice ask at reception or phone her.
