Location and map

The Fairlands Practice is a partnership of six doctors and one associate working from our main surgery in Worplesdon, near Guildford, Surrey and a branch surgery in the nearby village of Normandy. The main surgery moved to the new Fairlands Medical Centre in June 1998. This surgery is a modern, purpose built Medical Centre offering both NHS and private services. The branch surgery at Glaziers Lane, Normandy has been open since 1988 and also has a dispensary. All of our consulting rooms are on the ground floor and the surgeries provide facilities for the disabled.

We are a GP training Practice and from time to time we have registrars in General Practice who are in the final stages of their training. They are fully qualified with at least three years postgraduate hospital experience and are available for consultation alongside the partners. We also have other doctors and nurses undertaking training at this Practice, both undergraduate and postgraduate, seeking to gain experience in community and General Practice work.

The main surgery is situated adjacent to the Community Centre on the Fairlands estate which is approximately 2 miles north west of central Guildford off the A323 Aldershot Road. The branch surgery can be found a further 3 miles along the A323 in the village of Normandy a few hundred yards along Glaziers Lane.

Opening Hours

The practice is open from 8:00am to 6:30pm on weekdays only and telephone service is available at the main surgery during these hours. Outside these hours the telephone system will guide you to the out of hours service when needed in an emergency. Surgery times vary between the individual doctors but usually run from 8.30am to 11.00am in the morning and 4.00pm to 6:00pm in the evening. Patients can be seen as 'extras' when this is needed for urgent problems after every routine surgery.

The Fairlands Medical Centre:

Monday – Friday 8:00 - 18:30

Normandy Branch Surgery:

Monday – Friday 8.30 – 5.30

Doctors' individual surgery hours vary. Please also note that reception may be closed between 13:00 and 14:00

Contacting us

The Practice can be contacted on the following telephone and fax numbers for appointments and enquiries or for any other matters. You can also write to the practice by post to the addresses given below.

A new telephone system was installed at the surgeries from November 2003. Many patients had been concerned about having to press numbers on their telephone key pad to gain access to the branch surgery or other departments within the surgery leading to much confusion. We hope the new system will be easier for patients to use and more efficient as we now have separate numbers for the two surgeries. New technology has not been completely lost though and at the main surgery, those who wish to, can still press their keypads to go directly to administration so avoiding any delay at reception.

Due to the problems of confidentiality and potentially uncontrollable demand, the practice does not enable communication with patients on any clinical matters by e-mail. However, if you wish to offer any comments or suggestions about this website, you can do so on the e-mail address given below.

As it is necessary under regulations for providing services to patients within the NHS, the telephone system does have the ability to record telephone calls. You will be notified if this is happening.

Out of hours

Outside normal working hours the practice hands over on-call requests to the Thamesdoc out of hours service. This is staffed by GP's, sometimes including those at the Fairlands Practice. The out of hours telephone number is displayed below. To contact a Doctor out of hours, telephone the number below or the normal surgery number and you will hear a recorded message giving you a number to call. When you call this number a receptionist will take your details and pass them to the Doctor on call. The Doctor may give you advice over the telephone, ask you to visit an out of hours surgery, or visit you at home.
Please remember that the out of hours service should be used in emergency only.

Out of Hours Telephone |  020 8390 9991

NB: Please use this number only when the Surgery is closed.

Advice may also be obtained from NHS Direct who will be able to guide you as to what action to take in any situation.

Appointments

Advanced access

At the practice we operate an appointment system which is compliant with the latest Government requirements for 48 hour access to see a GP. In order to acheive this an 'Advanced Access' system was started from January 2003. This system uses some appointment slots that only become available on the day for emergency cases, some that are only 'opened' 48 hours in advance for routine cases and the remainder can be booked up to two weeks in advance.

No appointments can be booked for more than two weeks in advance. This is important as it avoids the need to cancel appointments for patients, as has so often been the case in the past, when unforseen circumstances occur. Unfortunately even doctors become ill occasionally or they may be required to change their appointments for important events.

When booking an appointment please make it clear if your problem requires urgent attention. If you are acutely ill you will always be seen on the same day by any available doctor. Please see the opening times above for more information of surgery times. If you have any problems arranging an appointment, either urgent or routine, please ask to speak to the duty doctor of the day or your own GP as necessary.

Online appointment booking

The Practice is now making available the ability to book appointments online and this service will be available from the 1st February 2008. In order to be able to do so, patients must register for this service at reception to receive the necessary Practice ID and PIN number to access the site. If you would like to be able to do this, please ask at reception to receive your personal information. This service is achieved through a secure connection to our EMIS computer system via the EMIS Access website. This website is maintained by the computer supplier and is a part of the patient.co.uk site.

Telephone advice

Your Doctor will be happy to provide telephone advice between 11.30 and 12.00, Monday to Friday (excluding National Holidays). Please remember that your doctor may sometimes be busy with another call but you can always leave a message and your doctor will ring you back when they can.

Home visits

The doctors will visit patients at home if they are medically too ill to come to the surgery. Please telephone the surgery before 11.00 am if possible to request a home visit that day. Home visits are usually done between 12.00 and 4.00 pm unless very urgent.

Please understand that the receptionists will need to ask why a visit is necessary so that they can inform the doctor who will then be in a better position to judge how urgent it is and plan their visits accordingly.

Please make sure that you tell the receptionist if your request for a home visit is urgent.

Medical Certificates

Statutory Sick Pay
It is not necessary to have a doctor’s certificate until you have been absent from work for one working week, including weekends.

After three days of sickness you need to obtain a 'self-certificate' from your employer or from reception at the practice. After seven days of sickness you must obtain a sickness certificate from your Doctor and give this to your employer. If your employer insists on a private certificate for an illness of less than seven days then a private certificate has to be given and you will be charged a fee for this. We would prefer your employer was charged for this as they are not legally allowed to insist on this.

Private Certificates
Private certificates may be needed for a number of reasons. These might include claim forms for private health insurance, holiday cancellation, school letters, etc. Such certificates are not provided as NHS entitlements and a fee will be charged for these.

Test Results

Due to patient confidentiality issues we are unable to give results to anyone other than the patient concerned.

The reception staff are only able to tell you that a result is normal if the doctor has marked it as such. If you need to know the results of any tests and your doctor has not already organised appropriate follow up after these, it is always preferable to consult your doctor or request a telephone call from them.

Please be assured that if any follow up from a test is required you will be contacted by the surgery. It is not, however, surgery policy to telephone patients with normal results.

Dental Emergencies

In the event of a dental emergency please contact your dentist if at all possible before asking to see a doctor. Your doctor will not be able to treat dental emergencies effectively and will need to refer you to your own dentist or the emergency service.

There is a central telephone contact for patients who are not registered with a dentist or who require emergency dental care

Tel: 01276 604 604

Prescriptions

If you are on regular medication your Doctor may issue a repeat prescription. You should keep the counterfoil of your prescription which details your medication list and can be used to order repeats when necessary. Please look out for instructions on this form as this may indicate that you need to have your treatment reviewed or give other information. Requests can be posted, faxed or left in Reception.

For security reasons we cannot accept repeat prescription requests by telephone as we cannot verify who is making the request. Although this may be inconvenient, please understand that there are very good reasons why this is necessary.

Your repeat prescription will be ready TWO working days after it is requested. If you would like us to post your prescription to you please provide a stamped addressed envelope.

Online repeat prescriptions

The Practice is now making available the ability to order repeat prescriptions online and this service will be available from the 1st February 2008.
