As it is necessary under regulations for providing services to patients within the NHS, the telephone system does have the ability to record telephone calls. You will be notified if this is happening.

Out of hours

  • Outside normal working hours the practice hands over on-call requests to the Harmoni out of hours service.

  • To contact a Doctor out of hours, telephone the number below or the normal surgery number and you will hear a recorded message giving you a number to call.

  • When you call this number a receptionist will take your details and pass them to the Doctor on call. The Doctor may give you advice over the telephone, ask you to visit an out of hours surgery, or visit you at home. Details of your consultation are sent through electronically to the Practice and uploaded onto your medical records.

Appointments

Advanced access

Subject to daily availability, at both sites we are able to offer

  • 1 week book ahead appointments
  • 48 hour book ahead appointments
  • Same day appointments
  • Internet appointments (beginning & end of day)

No appointments to see a doctor can be booked more than two weeks in advance unless specifically requested by a Doctor. This is important as it avoids the need to cancel appointments for patients when unforeseen circumstances occur.

It is unfortunate if all the appointments have been booked by other patients before your call is answered, and if an alternative appointment on another day is not suitable we do offer a lunchtime surgery with ‘5 minute’ consultation slots for patients who feel that they must be seen that day. These appointments cannot be pre-booked in advance nor can the patient determine which doctor they are seen by and should not be used by those who could be seen at another time. They are flexible surgeries which are allocated on the day to those doctors who are available and are slotted in at the end of morning surgery before home visits.

When booking an appointment please make it clear if your problem requires urgent attention. If you are acutely ill you will always be seen on the same day by any available doctor. Please see the opening times above for more information of surgery times.

Online appointment booking

The Practice is now making available the ability to book appointments online. In order to use this service, patients must register for this service at reception to receive the necessary Practice ID and PIN number per person to access the site. If you would like to be able to do this, please ask at reception to receive your personal information. This service is achieved through a secure connection to our EMIS computer system via the EMIS Access website. This website is maintained by the computer supplier and is a part of the patient.co.uk site.

Telephone advice

Your Doctor will be happy to provide telephone advice if you require by leaving a message with reception and your doctor will ring you back when they can. If the situation changes please contact the Surgery as soon as possible.

Home visits

The doctors will visit patients at home if they are medically too ill to come to the surgery. Please telephone the surgery before 11.00 am if possible to request a home visit that day. Home visits are usually done between 12.00 and 4.00 pm unless very urgent.

Please understand that the receptionists will need to ask why a visit is necessary so that they can inform the doctor who will then be in a better position to judge how urgent it is and plan their visits accordingly.

Please make sure that you tell the receptionist if your request for a home visit is urgent.

Medical Certificates

Statutory Sick Pay
It is not necessary to have a doctor’s certificate until you have been absent from work for one working week, including weekends.

After three days of sickness you need to obtain a 'self-certificate' from your employer or from reception at the practice. After seven days of sickness you must obtain a sickness certificate from your Doctor and give this to your employer. If your employer insists on a private certificate for an illness of less than seven days then a private certificate has to be given and you will be charged a fee for this. We would prefer your employer was charged for this as they are not legally allowed to insist on this.

Private Certificates
Private certificates may be needed for a number of reasons. These might include claim forms for private health insurance, holiday cancellation, school letters, etc. Such certificates are not provided as NHS entitlements and a fee will be charged for these.

Test Results

Due to patient confidentiality issues we are unable to give results to anyone other than the patient concerned.

The reception staff are only able to tell you that a result is normal if the doctor has marked it as such. If you need to know the results of any tests and your doctor has not already organised appropriate follow up after these, it is always preferable to consult your doctor or request a telephone call from them.

Please be assured that if any follow up from a test is required you will be contacted by the surgery. It is not, however, surgery policy to telephone patients with normal results.

Dental Emergencies

In the event of a dental emergency please contact your dentist if at all possible before asking to see a doctor. Your doctor will not be able to treat dental emergencies effectively and will need to refer you to your own dentist or the emergency service.

There is a central telephone contact for patients who are not registered with a dentist or who require emergency dental care

Tel: 01276 604 604

Prescriptions

If you are on regular medication your Doctor may issue a repeat prescription. You should keep the counterfoil of your prescription which details your medication list and can be used to order repeats when necessary. Please look out for instructions on this form as this may indicate that you need to have your treatment reviewed or give other information. Requests can be posted, faxed or left in Reception.

For security reasons we cannot accept repeat prescription requests by telephone as we cannot verify who is making the request. Although this may be inconvenient, please understand that there are very good reasons why this is necessary.

Your repeat prescription will be ready 48 hours after it is requested at Fairlands (and 72hours at Normandy). If you would like us to post your prescription to you please provide a stamped addressed envelope.

Online repeat prescriptions

The Practice is now making available the ability to order repeat prescriptions online and this service will be available from the 1st February 2008. In order to be able to do so, patients must register for this service at reception to receive the necessary Practice ID and PIN number to access the site. If you would like to be able to do this, please ask at reception to receive your personal information. This service is achieved through a secure connection to our EMIS computer system via the EMIS Access website. This website is maintained by the computer supplier and is a part of the patient.co.uk site.
